Last week, we passed a safe swim area ordinance for Bird/Egret Island located on Lake Butler. What was meant to be a sanctuary protected by the Audubon Society has for years been disturbed by people skirting the rules around trespassing and playing loud music. After more than a year of effort, we have passed a swim exclusion zone around Bird Island to improve safety related to stacking of boats, trespassing, and illegal usage of the island. Furthermore, there have been concerns about unregulated usage of water vessels on the lake and additional safety concerns. This is the first step in improving quality of life on the Butler Chain of Lakes.
