Conserving Land Through Green PLACE
One of my proudest achievements has been my steadfast commitment to expanding conservation lands within our community. In 2021, I successfully championed the revival of Orange County’s GreenPLACE Program, which focuses on acquiring environmentally sensitive land for conservation. On September 28, 2021, we took a significant step by officially establishing the GreenPLACE Advisory Board and acquiring 24 acres of crucial land between Lake Pickett Rd and the Econlockhatchee River. This strategic acquisition not only enhances water protection, aquifer recharge, and floodplain storage but also strengthens wildlife corridors in District 5.
Our efforts continued to gain momentum throughout 2023. The Environmental Protection Division appraised 77 parcels of land, and we were able to preserve 405 acres, including important wetlands that help mitigate flooding in areas like Reams Road and Tildenville. To ensure a sustained effort in protecting our natural resources, we have allocated $100 million in the budget for land acquisition over the next decade. This funding will support ongoing conservation efforts and safeguard our environment for future generations.
