Energy Efficiency
Floating Solar Array
Orange County is home to the largest floating solar array in the Southeastern U.S. This significant installation, completed by D3Energy and Orange County Utilities, spans two acres and is situated atop a man-made retention pond at the Southern Regional Water Treatment Facility. The energy generated by these solar panels will be used to provide clean water for thousands of residents.
Floating solar technology offers numerous advantages. The panels are cooled by the pond, which improves their efficiency compared to traditional land-based installations. They require no land clearing or ongoing maintenance and are designed to withstand hurricane-force winds. The panels are expected to last around 25 years and will generate enough energy to offset their cost within just nine years. Additionally, any excess energy produced will be net-metered and added back to the power grid.
This project represents a significant advancement in sustainable energy solutions for our area. We extend our gratitude to Orange County Utilities, D3 Energy, and our Office of Sustainability for their contributions to this innovative and impactful initiative.
