Protections for Bird Island

I have been deeply committed to protecting Bird Island in the Butler Chain of Lakes, addressing critical issues such as fatalities, noise, pollution, and habitat destruction caused by illicit activities. Since taking office, I have prioritized advocating for the preservation of this vital bird sanctuary, which has faced numerous threats from unsafe boating practices and other disturbances.

In 2022, we took significant action by passing a safe swim area ordinance for Bird/Egret Island located on Lake Butler. This area, initially intended to be a sanctuary protected by the Audubon Society, has long been disturbed by rule violations, including trespassing and loud music. After more than a year of effort, the new ordinance establishes a swim exclusion zone around Bird Island to improve safety by addressing concerns related to boat stacking, trespassing, and illegal usage. This measure also responds to issues of unregulated water vessel use on the lake.

These steps represent our ongoing commitment to enhancing safety and quality of life on the Butler Chain of Lakes. The ordinance is a testament to our dedication to balancing conservation with recreational use, ensuring that Bird Island remains a protected habitat and a safe, enjoyable location for the community.
